Dude, we've been an empire since the Spanish American War. The main difference between then and now is, we're now the only superpower on the planet, meaning, we are the only empire on the entire planet. It's been this way since 1989 or so. What we're experiencing is more like the first murmurs of the empire potentially collapsing, because of the global credit bubble destabilizing economies. Also, socialism has always rescued capitalism. An empire replacing the Republic? Dude, we’ve been an empire since the Spanish American War.
